Native seeds are the answer to food sovereignty in Guatemala and beyond. Our biodiversity program is a response to the interwoven threats of climate change, native species loss, and above all, the imposition and resulting dependence on GMO seeds, which require the use of damaging agrochemicals. In contrast, native and heirloom seeds offer many advantages, including their resilience to disease and climate events, their innate adaptation to the local environment, and their natural ability to be harvested and sown, year after year. Therefore, we seek to save, conserve, and adapt native and heirloom seeds. We work to protect native seeds and promote their use, with benefits today and for future generations. The biodiversity program’s activities are coordinated through the Seed House, which is located at our permaculture center.
